Box Score WASHINGTON - In its home-opening contest on Wednesday afternoon, The Catholic University of America men's soccer team lost a hard-fought battle to St. Mary's College of Maryland, 1-0, in overtime.
The Cardinals and Seahawks played and evenly matched 90 minutes with neither team able to break the deadlock in regulation. It was St. Mary's which came through in the end however, as Juwan Kearson scored with just over three minutes left in the first overtime period to remain unbeaten on the year.
In the first half of play, St. Mary's outshot Catholic by just one, 8-7. The Cards came back to outshoot the Hawks 9-8 in the second, giving each team a total of 16 shots during regulation, but the defenses held to force extra time.
During the overtime period, each team took two additional shots before St. Mary's found the golden goal to claim the victory in the 97th minute.
Catholic put eight shots on net, with junior Heston Priestley and sophomore Corbin Brailsford firing two shots on target. Senior goalkeeper Zachery Tashjy recorded six saves for the Cardinals, keeping the team's chances alive all game.
The Cards will remain at home in their next contest after its five-game road swing to open the year. Catholic takes on Guilford on Saturday, Sept. 17 at noon, at CUA Soccer Field.
