Catholic Pitching Leads Cardinals to Double Header Sweep Over Drew

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON- In a Landmark Conference double header, senior Colin Kelly and freshman Jon Mierzwa, of The Catholic University of America baseball team, each pitched full games to victories over Drew University.

Kelly threw game one where the Cardinals topped the Rangers 7-2. Kelly tossed six strikeouts in his seven innings on the mound and gave up just two hits.

Mierzwa took the rubber for game two in a 13-0 victory. The freshman dealt six K's including four in the final two innings. Mierzwa took out the first three batters of the sixth. After the first two Rangers grounded out to the mound in the seventh, he caught the final man looking.

Catholic sophomore Jake Crist earned the first RBI of the day when he cracked a double into left center during the first inning of game one. Following suit, senior John Palladino hit a double in the second inning to scored classmate Andrew Stewart and sophomore Anthony Ferlise. The Cards took a 3-0 advantage through two innings.

In the fourth inning Catholic increased their lead with an RBI-single from Stewart. The Cardinals brought three more home in the bottom of the sixth with RBI's from sophomore Matt Hsiung and Palladino, while Crist scored on a Ranger fielding error.

Drew's two runs came in the top of the fourth with a 2-run homer from Isaiah Mateo.

Catholic tallied 15 hits in game two and scored runs in all but the fourth inning with RBI's from seven Cardinals. In the first inning Schmidt came in on a wild pitch while freshman Bailey Lewis earned the first RBI of the game, bringing his season total to 24.

The bottom of the second saw a sacrifice bunt from Hsiung and RBI-singles from Palladino and Schmidt. Schmidt then made it home on a pick off attempt after advancing to third on a wild pitch. Hsuing and Stewart recorded runs in the bottom of the third and the Cards took 7-0 lead before a blank fourth inning.

The Cards added five more in the bottom of the fifth with RBI singles from Palladino, freshman Ryan Tracy, senior Mike Iglesia, and junior Brett Padula. Additionally, Tracy came across the plate on a wild pitch.

One inning away from the conference sweep Catholic added another run as sophomore Jack Hennessy singled up the middle to score junior Paul Burmester.

Mierzwa threw the final inning, three-up three-down. The Cardinals earned the win, shutting out the Rangers 13-0.

The conference opponents finish out the three-game series with a nine inning contest on Sunday, April 19. First pitch at Robert J. Talbot Field at noon.
