Cardinals Down Bison, 7-1, at Talbot Field

Box Score

WASHINGTON - In just their sixth home game of the 2016 season, The Catholic University of America baseball team topped Gallaudet University, 7-1, on Tuesday afternoon.

The Cardinals saw 10 hits in the midweek contest and capitalized on the Bison's five fielding errors. Freshman Ryan Tracy started off the Cardinal scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the third to score senior Andrew Stewart.

One inning later Catholic cracked open the game with six runs. Lead off batter, freshman Bailey Lewis, reached first on an error. Sophomore Brennan Cotter hit a single to reach first and advanced to second on a fielding error, sending Lewis to third. With runners in scoring position, Stewart sent a single into left field, scoring Lewis. Cotter stole home on the next play to bring the CUA tally to three.

Still in the bottom of the fourth and with two men on base, Tracy earned his second RBI of the day, driving home Stewart with a single. Senior John Palladino stepped to the plate with two outs, advancing senior Kevin Nader to third base with a double. The Bison walked senior Stefan Poggioli, and with the bases loaded the Cardinal's designated hitter, sophomore Jake Crist, stepped to the plate.

Crist, who entered the game with a .397 batting average, crushed a 3-RBI triple into the left corner bringing Catholic to a 7-run lead. Gallaudet retired the next batter and would look come back. The Bison got on the board in the top of the fifth, but were held to just the one run.

Eight Cardinals spent time on the mound in the nine-inning contest, striking out eight Bison. Freshman Collin Brown made the start, fellow freshman Mason Belcher entering in the third inning to earn his second win of the season.  Seniors Luc Sebrechts, Josh Martin, and Ian Moss each spent an inning on the rubber. Additional innings were pitched by Joseph Prego and Mark Duffy along with sophomore Sean Carroll.

The Cardinals will travel to Scranton, Pa., for a Landmark Conference series against the University of Scranton Royals, beginning with a double header Saturday, April 2 at noon.
