Box Score WASHINGTON – Lindsay Aleman of The Catholic University of America women's soccer team scored two second-half insurance goals inside the final three minutes of play to secure a 3-0 shutout victory over non-conference opponent, Virginia Wesleyan, on Tuesday evening.
The win advances Catholic to an 8-1-0 record for the year while Virginia Wesleyan, the No. 9 ranked team in the latest NSCAA South Atlantic Region poll, falls to 5-4-1.
With the first half nearing an end, the Cardinals dominated possession and pressed the Marlins goal. On just their second corner kick of the game, Catholic freshman Olivia Perez served the ball to the head of junior Alexa Povelaitis in the 37th minute. Povelaitis flicked the ball back to classmate Nia Gomez who headed it into the goal to give Catholic the 1-0 advantage.
The Cardinals continued to lead throughout the second half, holding the Marlins to only two shots on goal. Once the game reached the final five minutes, CUA managed to triple the score with two goals from Aleman, the program's all-time leading goal scorer. Her first goal came in the 88th minute when freshman Grace Boras slotted the ball to Aleman's feet who sent a 25-yard rocket into the back of net.
In the final minute of play, Aleman followed a back pass from a Marlins defender to goalkeeper Taylor Chapman. Aleman blocked Chapman's attempt to clear the ball inside the six-yard box, redirecting the ball over the goal line into the open net.
With the two goals, Aleman now has 112 career points, making her the all-time leading points leader for women's soccer in the Landmark Conference. She passed Emma Campbell ('15) who score 111 points throughout her career at Drew University.
The Cardinals return to conference play, hosting the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m.
