Catholic Defeats Mary Washington, 4-1

Box Score

Fredricksburg, Va. - The Catholic University of America women's soccer team notched their sixth win of the season with a 4-1 victory over the University of Mary Washington on Tuesday evening. The win advances the Cardinals overall record to 6-2 while the Eagles drop to 5-4 in 2015.

Catholic literally kicked off the game with a goal in the first 35 seconds of play when junior Jennifer Delasco took a centering pass from senior Kirsten Wosleger from the left side and tucked the ball in the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead. The Cards earned their second goal in the 36th minute when Ava Brown knocked the ball to Jillian Sudo who sent a high shot over the UMW goalkeeper's head from 20 yards out near the right sideline.

CUA nearly scored a third goal before intermission when they were awarded a free kick from the top of the penalty box with one minute left in the first half.  Senior Kelly Henderson took the kick that clanged off the crossbar, sending the Cardinals into the break ahead 2-0.

Mary Washington attempted to climb back into the game in the 56th minute when Marissa Maderas snuck the ball past CUA senior goalkeeper Lexi Halperin from a tight angle to cut the lead in half at 2-1.  Catholic answered quickly with back-to-back goals from Lindsey Aleman in the 63rd and 64th minutes to complete the 4-1 victory. The first goal was assisted by junior Alyssa Fiore, who flicked the ball with her head into space for Aleman to blast in the back of the net, while the second assist came off the foot off sophomore Andrea Jablonskyj.

Henderson lead Catholic's offensive efforts with three shots on goal, five shots total. Haplerin earned her sixth win of the season and made one save.  Aleman notched her 9th and 10th goals of 2015, which are also the 29th and 30th goals of her college career.

The Cardinals open Landmark Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 26 in Elizabethtown, Pa., when they take on the Blue Jays at 1:00 p.m.
