Box Score Lexington, Va. – It took extra time on Monday afternoon to decide a victor for The Catholic University of America field hockey team, as 2:23 into overtime the No. 12 Cardinals fell at Washington & Lee, 3-2.
The Generals took the lead first, scoring 10 minutes into the game, but CUA countered as Lane Adams found Madalyn Dennis for the score to bring the team's into the half tied at one-all.
Catholic took its first lead of the day just two minutes into the second as Rachel Day scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season, hitting the post and sending it in, unassisted.
The two teams remained scoreless for the next 20 minutes, but Washington & Lee found the equalizer with less than four minutes to play and forced overtime.
The Cardinals registered 18 shots in the game, but was only able to nine on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Analisa Scott made eight saves in the contest, including one on a point-blank penalty shot, but could not overcome 11 shots on goal.
Catholic will look to get back in the win column on Saturday at home when it starts Landmark Conference play against Elizabethtown at 1 p.m.
