Cardinals Top Marymount, Earn Third Shutout

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's soccer team hosted day two of the 2015 D.C. Classic and earned an 8-0 victory over Marymount University on Sunday evening. The win advances the Cardinals to 4-1 in the season while the Saints drop to 3-3 overall.

Cardinal senior goalkeeper Lexi Halperin started between the post for the Cardinals and senior Amy-Lynn Friel played the second half in goal, helping the team to their third shutout of the season.

Junior Lindsay Aleman and sophomore Nia Gomez each notched two goals for the Cards. Aleman put CUA on the board with the first score of the day with an unassisted shot after a bobbled save by the Marymount keeper. Her second goal came in the 75th minute with an assist from sophomore Andrea Jablonskyj. Gomez also converted a shot in the 75th minute for Catholic's final goal of the match. Her first goal of the game came in the 70th minute when she knocked a loose ball between the posts.

Sophomore Alexa Povelaitis earned her first goal of the season when she headed the ball into the top right corner of the net off of a free kick from senior Ava Brown in the 34th minute. Later, Povelaitis set up junior Jennifer Delasco for the opening goal of the second half in the 46th minute.

Senior Kirsten Wosleger struck in the 41st minute with an unassisted goal, and Jablonskyj put the ball in the net in the 72nd minute off a pass from Gomez.

Following the conclusion of the four games of the 2015 D.C. Classic, the All-Tournament Team was selected.
