Box Score WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America men's lacrosse team suffered their second loss of the season Saturday, March 7, against the Guilford College Quakers in Greensboro, N.C.
The loss brings CUA to an overall 4-2 record while Guilford advances to 3-0 on the season.
"Many offensive players had their opportunities today," said head coach Brooks Singer "We hit 5 posts in the first have and just could not capitalize on opportunities we had."
The Cardinals fell to an early two-goal deficit in the first quarter. Senior Billy Kirmsse (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) put the team on the board in the seventh minute of play.
Down 4-1 in the second quarter, sophomore Victor Licata (Towson, Md. / Loyola-Blakefield) scored in the 11th minute to bring the Cards to two.
Determined to close in on the Quakers before the halftime intermission, the Cardinals made a run in the final four minutes of play. Sophomore Connor Bruno (Babylon, N.Y. / St. John the Baptist) scored with an assist from Kirmsse. Sophomore Tim Keith (King of Prussia, Pa. / Archbishop Carroll) then brought Catholic to a one-goal deficit with a goal assisted by senior Chris Wellock (Wyomissing, Pa. / Wyomissing). The score read 5-4 Guilford at the half.
The Quakers managed three consecutive goals in the third quarter, increasing their lead 8-4. The Cardinals responded with two in the third, capping off their scoring at six on the day.
Sophomore Jack Oakes (Downingtown, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan) scored with an assist from sophomore Tony Fisher (Ardmore, Pa. / Lower Merion). Licata struck again with an unassisted goal in the remaining five minutes of the third.
Guilford scored four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, the final score tallying 12-6 in favor of the home Quakers.
Junior goalie Harrison Holak (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks East) made 13 saves on the day. The Cardinals also went 17 for 22 on face offs in comparison to the Quaker's five face offs wins.
"Holak had some key saves to keep us in the game early on," explained Singer. "We had too many turnovers and gave the other team too many opportunities."
The Cardinals head to the University of Tampa for their annual Spring Break training trip. They will take on Salve Regina while in Tampa at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday March, 10.
