CUA Men's Lax Bounces Back, 19-10 Win Over Immaculata

Box Score

WASHINGTON- The Catholic University of America men's lacrosse team brought home their fourth win of the season on Saturday, Feb. 28, after their previous loss to Hampden-Sydney in a whopping 19-10 win over the Immaculata College Mighty Macs in Immaculata, Pa.

The Cardinals were off to a rough start in the first quarter, falling quickly into a two-goal deficit. Freshman midfielder Jonathan Curran (Ridgefield, Conn. / Ridgefield) put the Cardinals on the board with a man-up goal assisted by sophomore midfielder Ethan Rodriguez (Miami, Fla. / Belen Jesuit Prep). Just nine seconds later, sophomore attack Tim Keith (King of Prussia, Pa. / Archbishop Carroll) scored off a pass from freshman middie Matt Michalski (Pasadena, Md. / Chesapeake). The score 2-2, sophomore midfielder Dylan Neville (Port Washington, N.Y. / Kellenberg Memorial) put the Cardinals in the lead, from which they were not challenged for the rest of the game.

The Cardinals had a total of 14 different players score, reeling in 19 goals to the Might Mac's 10. Senior long stick middie John Sullivan (Falls Church, Va. / Gonzaga) and sophomore attack Tony Fisher (Ardmore, Pa. / Lower Merion) helped increase the lead in the first quarter, along with senior attack Billy Kirmsse (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown). Kirmsse reeled in another goal for the Cardinals in the second quarter, leaving his total for the day at two. Neville also scored two on the day, along with Curran. Freshman attack Samuel Montgomery (West Chester, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan) led the team in goals with three, scoring twice in the second quarter and once in the third.

Sophomores Victor Licata (Towson, Md. / Loyola-Blakefield), Jack Oakes (Downingtown, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan), and Connor Bruno (Babylon, N.Y. / St. John the Baptist) scored in the second quarter, along with senior attack Brian Keith (King of Prussia, Pa. / Archbishop Carroll). Freshmen Liam Clancy (Brookfield, Conn. / Brookfield), Johnny Chun (Knoxville, Tenn. / Webb School), and Daniel Cannon (Forked River, N.J. / Lacey Township) also added points for the Cardinals as the team took their largest win yet this season.

"The offense played as a unit and played very unselfish lacrosse," said head coach Brooks Singer. "Lots of assisted goals and 14 different goal scorers were great to see."
Three Cardinals saw time in the goal against the Mighty Macs totaling ten collective saves. Starting goalie junior Harrison Holak (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks East) was credited with the win, making four saves. Senior Kevin Cardillo (West Deptford, N.J. / Bishop Eustace) made three saves, and senior Jack Connelly (North Potomac, Md. / Maryland) closed out the game with one.

"We were able to give opportunities to some guys to step up," said Singer. "Giving Holak an opportunity to rest was nice, and it is great to play Cardillo and Connelly."

The Cardinals will travel to Guilford College on Saturday, March 7, for a 2:00 p.m. game.

"We worked on playing a full 60 minute complete game," said Singer. "We still have work to do, but we also improved in certain areas today. We plan to work hard this week in practice to prepare for our next game. We are focused on continuing our preparation for conference play."
