Box Score Kings Point, N.Y - The Catholic University of America men's soccer team dropped their Landmark Conference match up Saturday afternoon, 3-1, to the United Stated Merchant Marine Academy. With the loss the Cardinals fall to a 4-6-1 overall record with a 1-2 Landmark record, while the Mariners advance to 8-3, 2-1.
The Cardinals held off the Mariners for the first half of the match and got on the board first, seven minutes into the second half. Catholic was awarded a penalty kick in the after a USMMA handball inside the 18-yard box. Senior Tyler Zimmerman fired the PK past the USMMA keeper for a 1-0 CUA lead.
Two minutes later the Mariners struck back when junior Timothy Hughes inbounded a corner kick that found the back of the net off the head of senior Ryan Gardner, tying the game at one. USMMA earned their go-ahead goal in the 79th minute after a free kick. Just three minutes later they notched their insurance goal when the Hughes-Gardner duo struck again off a corner kick opportunity. The Mariners held the 3-1 lead until the clock expired at 90 minutes.
The Marines outshot the Cardinals 15-11, while Zimmerman led the Catholic offense taking four shots. Senior Connor Keale and freshman Brian Galfond each took two during the competition as junior goalkeeper Zachery Tashjy made five saves.
The Cardinals continue conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 7, when they host Goucher College at 4 p.m. at CUA Soccer Field.
