Box Score WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America field hockey team turned a first half tie into 3-1 win over the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown on Saturday, September 27 in Elizabethtown, Pa., for the team's first Landmark Conference win of the season.
The win improves the Cards to 6-1 on the season and 1-0 in the conference, as the Blue Jays drop to 4-5 on the year and 0-1 in their first-ever Landmark matchup.
E-Town struck first, as Alyssa Aichele found the box on a rebound at the 4:32 mark of the first half.
Exactly two minutes later, CUA's Kim Hermann recorded her first goal of the season when she finished up a cross pass from Colleen Harwood on the left side of the goal.
After the quick opening goals, neither team managed to break the 1-1 tie before heading into the halftime intermission.
At the half, CUA had taken nine shots and three corners in contrast to Elizabethtown's three shots.
Picking up from their first half output, the Cardinals continue to search for a goal. Then, at the 63rd minute mark Taylor Elliott found the box on her third consecutive shot attempt. Elliott knocked in a pass from Harwood from the middle for 2-1 lead.
The final goal of the day came from Rachel Day with a double assist from Ellen Thorburn and Hermann on a corner to secure the 3-1 win.
Catholic continues the season on Wednesday, October 1 with a 6:00 p.m. matchup against No. 12 Christopher Newport at Cardinal Stadium.
Notes: The Cardinals entered the contest holding on to their No. 14 NFHCA ranking. Today's win marked the first Landmark Conference win over Elizabethtown, who become full members of the conference this year.
