WASHINGTON- The Catholic University men's soccer team emerged victorious over St. Mary's (Md.) on Tuesday, ending their three-game losing streak with a close 3-2 win over the Seahawks in St. Mary's, Md.
The game remained scoreless through the first half, as both teams fired away at the opposing net. The Cardinals battled for midfield possession and managed four shots on visiting goalkeeper Zack Haussler. Catholic goalie Torsten Meuschke made his fifth start of this 2014 season, recording two saves in 90:00 minutes of play.
While both teams gained momentum in the second half, the Cardinals were first on the board at the 50th minute, as sophomore Sean Adams found the ball in front of the Seahawks' goal. Catholic struck again seven minutes later as Adams blocked a defensive clear, sending the ball up the Cardinal's half. Senior Ben Fleri finished the job, and the Cardinals went up 2-0.
St. Mary's quickly responded with two goals, and tying the game. Zach Fontenot sent a shot to the net from a stolen ball, and Alexander Driessen connected on a low corner kick.
With less than 20 minutes to play, the Cardinals capitalized on their remaining time. The ball made its way in front of the St. Mary's goal. Junior Alex Laprade found his footing and snuck the ball just inside the goal post, giving the Cardinals a 3-2 lead and eventual win. Junior Tyler Zimmerman was credited with the assist.
The Cardinals excelled in several aspects of play, recording 11 total shots with six shots on goal. The team created five corner kick opportunities, keeping the Seahawks to a meager three. Their win ended the losing streak and advanced the squad to a 2-4-0 overall record.
Catholic returns home to host Landmark Conference newcomers Elizabethtown on Saturday, September 20 at 1:00 p.m. at the CUA Soccer Field.
