Box Score WASHINGTON – The No. 7 Catholic University field hockey saw its championship title reign end on Saturday night, as they fell 1-0 to the Juniata Eagles during the 2014 Landmark Conference Title game at Cardinal Stadium in double overtime.
With the loss, CUA suffers its second loss to the Eagles this season and drops to 15-3 overall and (6-2) on the season, as JC, who reclaims the title after three years of upsets, improves to 14-5 on the year (6-2).
The Eagles upset the Cardinals by scoring on their one and only shot of the night at the 87:59 mark of the second overtime. JC's Katie Alexander, who was named tournament MVP, scored the game-winning goal when she broke down field beside her teammate and pulled CUA's Analisa Scott out of the box to drop one in the left corner of the cage.
CUA had several opportunities to clinch the title, with 21 shots (nine on goal) and 19 penalty corners throughout the contest. Maura Campbell led the squad in shots with nine on the night.
JC made three defensive saves with two coming from Kelsey Leibelspereger and Kortney Showers making one defensive save of her own. Eagles' goalkeeper Julianne Jones tallied six saves.
The top-ten NFHCA ranking Cardinals will wait to hear if they are to receive a NCAA Tournament bid Sunday night.
Notes: Tonight's title appearance marked the programs fifth consecutive Landmark Conference Title battle.
Juniata and Catholic are the only two conference teams with conference titles. JC won four in a row (2007-10), while CUA won three in a row (2011-13).
At the conclusion of the 2008 Landmark Conference Field Hockey Championships, the Cardinals lost in double overtime to Juniata 2-1.
