WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America men's soccer team finished on top with a 2-1 win over The United States Merchant Marine Academy in a Landmark Conference match on Saturday.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 5-5-1 (2-1-0 Landmark), while the Mariners fall to 6-5-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the conference.
The Catholic offense dominated the first 25 minutes, outshooting USMMA 5-2. In the 29th minute of play Nico Bartolomeo found the back of the goal after a quick pass form Josh Barrett putting the Cardinals on the board 1-0.
Merchant Marine tied the contest at the 44th minute mark when USMMA's Kyle Arestivo booted a direct kick over the Cardinal goalie Torsten Meuschke heading into the halftime intermission.
The Mariners took control of the contest in the second half, outshooting Catholic 11-5 with six shots on goal in final 45 minutes of play.
At the 79th minute the Cardinals were able to put another goal on the scoreboard. Senior Hunter Horvath leaped for a bicycle kick and placed the ball in the back of the net for a 2-1 lead.
"Horvath's goal was special is all I can say. He worked really hard all day so it was deserved. The guys were really excited to get a goal like that. It is the only bicycle we have had in my eight years of coaching," said CUA Head Soccer Coach Travis Beauchamp.
Tyler Zimmerman led the offense taking five shots, while Meuschke made eight saves throughout the game.
The CUA men's soccer team with visit Goucher College on Wednesday, October 8 at 7:00 p.m. for a Landmark Conference contest.
