Catholic Defeats Susquehanna 4-1, Earns Home Field Advantage

Selinsgrove, Pa. – The Catholic University of America women's soccer team extended its win streak to seven games, as they pulled out a 4-1 win over the Susquehanna Crusaders on Saturday.

The win earns the Cardinals home field advantage for the semi-final round of the Landmark Conference Championship Tournament. The Cards advances to 6-0-0 in the conference and 12-1-2

on the season. Susquehanna falls to 1-4-1 in the conference.

The Cardinals' first goal came just 13 minutes into the game, when they were awarded a corner kick. Ava Brown took the kick sending the ball to Kaylre Greaves who sent a header inside the goal, putting the Cards on the board 1-0.

The second goal of the night for CUA came after Alexa Povelaitis won a free ball in midfield.  She slotted a perfect pass to Lindsay Aleman who ripped a hard shot past the Crusader's keeper Jordyn Slocum at the 39:35 mark of the first half.

In the 43rd minute, the Cardinals unsuccessfully cleared the ball leaving the net wide open for the Haley Bingman to put Susquehanna on the scoreboard for a 2-1 count going into halftime.

After the intermission the Cardinals regained control and developed momentum early into the second half.

A shot on goal came from Aleman in the 63rd minute, the Susqehanna keeper made the saved but was unable to gain control of the ball. Kirsten Wosleger recoverd the rebound and sent the ball into the goal, keeping her in conference scoring streak alive and giving the Cardinals a 3-1 lead. 

CUA's final point came in the 69th minutes when Kaylre Greaves picked up a loose ball inside the 18 yard box. She sent the ball across the goalmouth right to the foot Aleman who placed it in the back of the net.

Overall the Cardinals outshot the Crusaders 18-8.  Greaves and Aleman each took four shots under the lights.

The Catholic defense played strong, holding the Susquehanna offense to just two shots on goal over the 90 minutes of competition.

"We made the trip up to Selinsgrove today knowing that a win would give us home field advantage for the conference playoffs. The girls were focused on that, and even though it got a little interesting before halftime, we came together and won the game," said CUA Head Women's Soccer Coach J.P. Sousa.

The Cardinals take on Washington Adventist in a non-conference match on Tuesday, October 28 at 4:00 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium in Washington, D.C.
