Wosleger Notches Two Goals in Conference Event

Box Score

TOWSON, Md. – Catholic University women's soccer standout Kirsten Wosleger put the Cardinals on the scoreboard early in the first half, after a pair of unassisted goals en route to CUA's 2-0 victory over the Goucher College Gophers at Beldon Field.

Wosleger's first goal came in the 12th minute, as she came down wide to the right wing and strategically cut the ball inside the Goucher defender.  She took a shot towards the far post, that sailed into the side net beyond the goalkeeper's reach for the Cards opening goal.

Just six minutes later, Wosleger picked off a square pass between Gouchers' two center backs and created her own breakaway. The Gophers' keeper, Lexi Rudolph, came off the goal line and got a hand on the ball, but was unable to gain control. Wosleger took the open net opportunity and sent a simple shot into the back of the goal.

After a total of nine shots in the first half the Cardinals headed into the halftime intermission leading Goucher 2-0.

Following the break the Card's made multiple attempts to advance their score past two goals. During the last 18 minutes of play Catholic held possession, while taking eight shots and two corner kicks.

Overall, CUA outshot GC 22-5 in the competition. Wosleger and Andrea Jablonskyj led the Catholic shot attempts with four apiece.  While Catholic's Alexa Povelaitis, Sara Gallagher, and Sarah Madden all took three shots each.

The Cardinal defense held the Gophers to just three shots in the first half and two in the second. Lexi Halperin made two saves, stopping both of the Gophers shot on goal attempts.

With the victory, the Cards improve to 11-1-2 overall and 5-0 in the league, while Goucher falls to 3-11-1 on the season and 0-5 in the conference. The win secures Catholic's playoff spot in the Landmark Conference Championship Tournament.

"The team is happy with tonight's result. We came up to Goucher with a simple job to do - get the win to clinch a playoff spot. It wasn't a pretty game, but we got the job done," said CUA Head Soccer Coach J.P. Sousa.

The Cardinals continue the season with a Landmark matchup against the Susquehanna Crusaders on Saturday, October 25, in Selinsgrove, Pa., at 3:30 p.m.

Notes: Tonight's contest was originally scheduled for Wednesday, October 15, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather conditions.
