Box Score WASHINGTON – The Drew University women's soccer team
spoiled the Catholic University's homecoming game with a 2-1
decision over the Cardinals in both teams' Landmark
Conference opening game on Saturday, Sept. 28 in Washington,
D.C.
Catholic got on the board early, when Kate
Masson (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) sent a cross into the box
from the left flank. The Drew defense tried to clear the ball out
of harm's way but an awkward bounce caused the team an own
goal, putting Catholic up 1-0 in the 11th minute of the game.
Emma Campbell was able to tie things up for Drew before halftime
as she dribbled down the left side into Cardinal territory and past
the back line, ripping a shot past Lexi
Halperin (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) at 32:00 on the
clock.
The teams went into the intermission tied a 1-1, with Drew
holding a 4-to-2 advantage in shots. Both teams were able to create
three corner kick opportunities in the first stanza.
As the second half got underway, Campbell was at it
again for the Rangers as she was able to outrun the Cardinal
defense for her second goal of the game in the 61st minute. She
collected the ball from midfield and beat two defenders down the
right sideline to set up her game-winning goal.
After a two game absence, Halperin was back in goal for
the Cardinals, she registered three saves in the game. The
Cardinals were even with the Rangers at four shots a piece in the
second half.
The Cardinals (5-5) return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 2 when
they travel to Fredericksburg, Va. for a non-conference tilt
against Mary Washington (4-5), kickoff is scheduled for 4:00
p.m.
