Box Score WASHINGTON - The Catholic University men's soccer team
played Drew University to a 1-1 double overtime tie during the CUA
Homecoming match on Saturday, Sept. 28 in Washington, D.C.
The game got off to a quick start as Ian Smith
(Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) set up Justin
Oloriz (Laguna Nigel, Calif./Mater Dei) with a through ball
into Ranger territory. Oloriz put the Cardinals up 1-0 as
he got past Michael Reyes with his first goal of the season just
4:39 into the game.
Drew answered back quickly, as John Nogiewich headed home a
throw-in from Michael Pezzuti at the 12-yard box that trickled past
Torsten Meuschke (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder). The goal
knotted the score at 1-1 in the 16th minute. The score remained
until halftime as the team headed into the intermission tied.
Both teams were battling hard to score a goal and pick up their
first conference victory. With under ten minutes to go in
regulation, things got increasingly physical as a number of
cautions were handed out. Reyes received a yellow card for
Drew with 84:31 on the clock for handling the ball outside of his
goal box, and teammate Gio Howells was ejected from the game after
receiving a red card for a dangerous tackle with less than two
minutes to play. Ben Fleri (College Park, Md./DeMatha) also
picked up a yellow card at the 89:21 mark.
The teams were scoreless in the second half and headed into two
sudden-death overtime periods. Drew was forced to play one man down
for the remainder of the game due to Howells'
ejection.
Catholic dominated the opportunities in both overtime periods,
outshooting the Rangers 5-to-2 but was unable to connect on any of
their chances. After 110 minutes of play, the score remained tied a
1-1, as both teams earned one point towards their Landmark
standings.
Meuschke registered four saves in goal for the
Cardinals. For the game, Drew created seven corner kick chances to
Catholic's three. The Cardinals doubled up the Rangers in
shots, holding a 16-to-8 advantage for the match.
The Cardinals (5-3-2) return to action next Saturday, Oct.
5 for another doubleheader against Landmark Conference foe Moravian
(5-3-2) in Washington, D.C. with a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
