Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – CUA got its offense in gear on
Tuesday, exploding for 12 runs on 12 hits in a 12-4 victory over
York (Pa.). The Cardinals scored four runs in the 1st and then
sealed the win with a five-run 5th to improve to 6-2 this season.
The Spartans see their record fall to 2-2 in 2013.
CUA jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the top of the
1st. Mark Kalokitis brought home the first run with a single to
left, and Chris McCloud delivered the big blow, drilling a
three-run home run to left to make it 4-0.
York scored once in its half of the 1st to trim the lead to
three.
The Spartans then pulled to within one with two more runs in the
4th, but CUA broke things wide open with a five-run 5th.
Pat DeToro got things going with a one-out single. Brendan Breslin
followed with a single of his own and Marc Hanna walked to load the
bases.
Kalokitis was next and he delivered a two-run double to right to
make it 6-3. Two batters later, McCloud continued his big day with
a two-run single to put CUA on top by five.
A Wes Stonelake ground out plated Nick Clary and the Cards were in
front 9-3.
CUA completed its scoring with three more runs in the 7th,
including a Mike McFarland sac fly to centerfield. Two Spartan
errors allowed the other two Cardinals to score, as CUA opened up a
commanding 12-3 lead.
York was able to push one run across in the bottom of the frame,
but it was too little, too late.
Kalokitis finished the day 3 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs
scored, while McCloud drove in five runs on two hits.
On the mound for CUA, Kevin Farley picked up the win after going
six innings and allowing only three earned runs.
Dustin Hanley, Brian Cahill, Will O'Leary and Chris Nee
worked the final three frames in relief.
CUA roughed up York starter Dan Gurganus, last season's CAC
Rookie of the Year, to the tune of nine runs on eight hits in 4.2
innings.
CUA returns to action on Wednesday when the Cards take on N.C.
Wesleyan at noon.
