Early runs hold up in CUA's fourth straight win

Box Score

WASHINGTON – CUA scored three 1st inning runs and that was all the Cardinals needed in a 3-2 win over McDaniel (0-1) on Monday in the home opener. Rob Steinkopf earned the win on the mound for CUA (4-0), while Nick Clary drove in two runs to help lead to the win.

CUA put its first two hitters on base in the opening inning, with Brendan Breslin leading off with a single and Eric Scamardella following with a walk.

A one-out walk to Mark Kalokitis loaded the bases and Clary then delivered a two-run double to right. A Chris McCloud sac fly to right then plated Kalokitis and CUA led 3-0 after one.

The Green Terror got on the board for the first time in the 3rd when Pat Christopher singled home Tyler Jackow to make it 3-1.

CUA threatened in the 5th when Breslin reached on an error, but the next batters were retired and the score remained 3-1.

In the 6th, McDaniel put the first two runners on, but Jonah Jimenez struck out the next two hitters and got the third to ground out to end the threat.

One inning later, CUA put two runners on with one out, but was unable to push anyone across.

The Green Terror inched closer in the 8th when James Chiorello doubled home Christopher to make it 3-2. The next two batters were retired though, and CUA held on to the one-run lead.

In the 9th, Chris Nee retired three of the four batters he faced to help lead CUA to its fourth straight win.

Steinkopf threw four innings on the afternoon, allowing just one earned run on four hits. Jimenez then went two innings, before Josh Martin, Dustin Hanley and Nee finished things off.

Zach Jones took the loss for the visitors, after he allowed three runs on three hits in four innings.

CUA is back at home on Thursday afternoon when the Cardinals play host to Messiah. Start time is set for 3 p.m. from Talbot Field.
