WASHINGTON – The Cardinals had their hands full with No. 19 Shenandoah on Wednesday, falling to the Hornets 18-1 at Talbot Field.  Shenandoah pounded out 19 hits and took advantage of six CUA errors en route to the win.

Shenandoah jumped on top of the Cardinals with a four-run first inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Jake Pendergraft.

The Hornets then added a single run in the second and two more in the third to open up a 7-0 lead on CUA.

The Cardinals got on the board for the first and only time in the third when Matt Grieb singled home Tim Mierzwa, but CUA was unable to get its bats going in the final six innings.

Shenandoah scored three times in the fourth, twice in the fifth and two more times in the seventh to pull away for the win.

Nicholas McMahon went all nine innings on the hill for the Hornets, striking out seven and scattering seven hits during that time.

Tom Egan got the start for CUA and suffered the loss after allowing five runs in 2.0 innings on five hits.  Kevin Farley, Colin Kelly, Justin D'Alessandro, Rob Renzi and Chris Nee also pitched for the Cardinals.

Tommy Little, Grieb, Trevor Falk, Brendan Breslin, Pat DeToro, Mark Kalokitis, and Mike Gannon all tallied hits for CUA, while Joey Donofrio and Pendergraft finished with four hits for the Hornets.

CUA returns to action on Saturday afternoon when the Cardinals host Landmark Conference foe Juniata in a doubleheader.  First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
