Cardinals pick up first conference win after downing Drew 13-5

MADISON, N.J. – CUA notched its first Landmark Conference win of the 2012 season on Friday, downing Drew 13-5.  Andrew Carroll picked up the win after going 6.0 innings and striking out four, while Tim Mierzwa, Matt Grieb and Dan Hinchcliff all had two hits for the Cardinals.

Grieb got CUA going with a triple to lead off the second inning and he came around on a wild pitch to give the Cards a 1-0 lead.  Later, Brendan Breslin tripled home Colin McCarthy and Dave Grear's sac fly brought home Breslin to give CUA a 3-0 lead.

CUA upped its lead to four in the third when Mierzwa came home on a balk, and the Cardinals then blew things wide open with a seven-run fourth inning.

McCarthy led off the frame with a single and Grear reached on a one-out error.  Hinchcliff then brought home both Cardinals with a single to make it 6-0.

Tommy Little and Mierzwa followed with singles of their own, with Mierzwa's bringing in Hinchcliff.  A Rangers error allowed Little to score, and Grieb plated Mierzwa with yet another RBI single.

Marc Hanna came across on a Mark Kalokitis single and Grieb came home on McCarthy's double to give CUA a commanding 11-0 lead after three-and-a-half.

Drew got on the board for the first time with a pair of runs in the fourth, but CUA pushed a single run across in the fifth to go in front by 10.  Wes Stonelake's pinch hit double plated Hinchcliff for the CUA run in the inning.

The Rangers scored once in the sixth, but again CUA answered with a run of its own in the next half-inning.  Greg Vernier's ground out plated Beriah Smith for the Cardinals' 13th run of the afternoon.

After Carroll pitched the first six innings for CUA, Rob Steinkopf, Jake Meister and Matt Petronis came on in relief, combining to throw 3.0 innings and allowing only two runs on four hits.

Ken Myers suffered the loss for the Rangers after allowing 11 runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings.

On Saturday, the teams close out their three-game series with a doubleheader beginning at 9 a.m.
