GREENSBORO, N.C. – CUA rode a 5-1 third quarter to a 12-8
win over Guilford on Saturday afternoon. The win is the fifth
straight for the Cardinals and improves them to 6-1 overall.
Marc Saxton scored a game-high four goals, while Chris Fuccillo
added two.
Guilford jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 11:21 mark of the opening
quarter when Greg Nash scored off a Chase Clausen assist.
Saxton got CUA on the board two minutes later to tie things at
one, and he gave the Cardinals the lead with his second score at
the 5:37 mark.
12 seconds later, Henry Farley pulled Guilford even when he found
the back of the net and that is how the score remained after one
quarter.
Brendan Englert gave the lead back to the Cardinals when he found
the back of the net early in the second, and Tom Scotto followed
with another CUA goal to put the visitors on top 4-2.
Guilford got to within one on Taylor Tesodosio's goal at the
11:05 mark, and Nick Mann tied things at four with his goal at the
9:20 mark.
Henry Farley then put CUA in a one-goal hole with a score 28
seconds later and when Greg Nash found the back of the net at the
7:14 mark, the Cardinals were down 6-4.
Fuccillo made it 6-5 with a goal with 2:32 to play before
halftime, and Englert's score with 28 ticks to go pulled the
Cardinals even at intermission.
Sean Cummins got the third quarter going with a goal to give CUA a
7-6 lead, and Fuccillo's score at the 9:30 mark increased the
lead to two.
Brian Keith got into the act with a goal at the 8:18 mark to make
it 9-6, but Teodosio pulled Guilford within two with a score at the
4:39 mark.
With under a minute to play in the quarter, Fuccillo and Saxton
scored to send CUA into the final 15 minutes leading
11-7.
Saxton scored his fourth goal with 8:17 to play in the game, which
put the Cardinals on top by five, and the CUA defense was able to
hold Guilford without a score until only nine seconds were
left.
CUA finished with a 40-29 advantage in shots, and a 26-20 lead in
ground balls. The Cardinals were 12 of 14 in clear attempts
and 16 of 24 in face-offs.
Tom Scotto won 14 face-offs for the Cardinals and led the way with
seven ground balls, while Fuccillo, Chris Wellock and Drew Saine
each caused a turnover.
Patrick Pfaff stopped 10 shots in goal for CUA, while Guilford
goalie Thomas Deane sent back 11 shots.
The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday when they again hit the
road, this time to face Washington College. The opening
face-off is set for 6 p.m.
