Box Score TOWSON, Md. – CUA snapped its three-game losing streak
with an 84-51 win over Goucher (4-20, 1-13) in the regular season
finale on Saturday. Steve Limberiou scored a game-high 21
points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Cardinals, who improve
to 17-8 overall and 7-7 in the Landmark Conference.
Leading 8-6 in the early going, CUA went on a 6-0 run to open up a
14-6 lead with 12:53 to play before halftime.
The lead reached double figures on Jared Prince's layup at
the 8:36 mark, and Shawn Holmes' basket less than a minute
later extended the lead to 13.
Goucher was able to cut the lead down to eight following a Damon
Brooks basket at the 4:51 mark, but CUA responded with an 11-0 run
that was capped by back-to-back free throws by Billy Donovan, which
put the Cardinals in front 38-19.
Two baskets by Pete Schramm late in the half sent CUA into the
break with a comfortable 43-23 advantage.
Limberiou scored the first two points of the second half to extend
to a 22-point lead, but the Gophers scored four straight to get
within 18 with 18:17 remaining.
Holmes got inside for a layup at the 13:52 mark to put CUA in
front by 23, and Limberiou's 3-pointer with 9:06 on the clock
pushed the lead to 26.
Darrell Carroll's basket with 6:45 to play made it a
30-point spread, and Derek Puhalski's jumper three minutes
later set the margin at 33.
Nate Lorence's free throw in the final 30 seconds again
pushed the lead to 33 as CUA picked up win No. 17.
Five Cardinals finished in double figures, with Schramm (18),
Holmes (16), Carroll (11) and Donovan (10) joining Limberiou
(21). Holmes led the team with four assists and three steals,
and as a team, the Cardinals sank 18 of 22 free throws (82%).
Brooks led the Gophers in scoring with 20 points, while Marcus
Cotton pulled down a team-high eight caroms. Goucher shot
only 31% from the floor and 5% from 3-point range (1-21).
The Cardinals will now wait word to see if they are selected for
the ECAC Tournament, which gets underway beginning on Wednesday,
February 29.
