CUA beats Washington & Lee in home opener 3-1

Box Score

WASHINGTON- The CUA field hockey team opened its 2011 season with a great defensive stand over the Washington & Lee Generals on Friday afternoon.  The final score was 3-1 with CUA's Maura Campbell, Tracey Scanlon, and Rebecca Lukaszczyk scoring one goal apiece while Washington & Lee's Catherine Klinedinst scored once.

The Cardinals dominated the Generals, outshooting them 28-2, and they were awarded 17 penalty corners while the Generals were awarded zero.  Washington & Lee's Kirsten Kyne had 21 saves, while CUA's goalkeeper Allison Dillard was barely challenged and did not record any saves.

CUA started the first half off strong with a shot three minutes into the contest, but it was saved by Kyne.  Three minutes later Scanlon fired a shot but was unsuccessful as Kyne made another great save.

The Generals first shot was attempted by Victoria Van Natten 16:28 into the contest but it was wide.  CUA's Scanlon was able to launch another shot at 18:01 off a penalty corner from Kim Hermann but it was saved once again by Kyne.  CUA was awarded nine penalty corners and fired eight shots before Lukaszczyk scored the first goal of the game with a little over three minutes left in the first half.

Just like the first half, the Cardinals started off strong in the second with Mary Swarthout attempting back-to-back shots only two minutes in, but both were saved by Kyne.

CUA's offense kept the pressure on as it was awarded two penalty corners and shot three times before Scanlon scored her first goal of the day making the score 2-0.  The Cardinals final goal of the game came only 13 minutes later when Campbell slipped one past Kyne making the score 3-0.

Washington & Lee's offense didn't give up as Klinedinst hustled down field after CUA attempted two back-to-back shots and scored the Generals first and only goal of the day at the 63:07 mark, making the final score 3-1.

The Cardinals will return to action on Sunday, September 4 when they take on Randolph-Macon at Cardinal Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
