Cardinals Sink Shoremen in
Extra Innings
CUA ties it in the bottom of the ninth
4/24/2008
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University baseball squad got a big
comeback win over the Washington College Shoremen (16-21) Thursday
afternoon at Talbot Field. CUA trailed until the bottom of the
ninth where some wild occurrences allowed two runs to score.
CUA won it 7-6 in the bottom of the 11th.
The Cards are now 20-13-1 on the season with four contests
remaining.
The Shoremen started off strong with three consecutive hits to
lead off resulting in two runs scored in the top of the first. CUA
had its first opportunity in the bottom of the second with runners
on the corners but a delayed steal went awry as the runner at third
was caught going to home to end the inning. The Cardinals began the
comeback in the bottom of the third as Paul Yantosh (Norristown,
Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) sent one over the wall. However, in the top
of the fifth the Shoremen added four more to make the score 6-1.
A triple by Tommy Little (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha) set up a
scoring opportunity in the bottom of the seventh with one out as
Joe Devine (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) came up and hit to the
right field foul pole and over the fence allowing two runs in. The
Cards held the Shoremen for the final four innings and got the
hitting going in the bottom of the ninth.
With runners on the corners and one out an error by the
shortstop brought Patrick Quintana (Denver, Colo./Littleton) home
and moved runners to second and third. Up came Mike Goodman
(Brookville, Md./Sherwood) who hit a line shot to short which hit
the umpire near second base advancing Goodman to first but not
allowing the runners to move. Robbie O'Brien's (Columbia, Md./Long
Reach) single towards third allowed one in and kept the bases
loaded. Unfortunately the second out came on the next at bat as the
runner at third was caught stealing on a missed bunt. Things swung
back into CUA's favor on Matt Rosner's (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry
Hill West) hit to short which was dropped by the first baseman
allowing Rosner on with an error and Little to come home just
sliding under the tag to tie it.
The Cardinal defense went three and out in the top of the tenth
and the top of the 11th giving the offense another
chance. This time, things worked out for CUA. Joe Maca
(Oyster Bay, N.Y./Saint Dominic) got on with a long hit to right
field. Kevin Sweeney (Bethesda/St. Anselm's Abbey School)
moved the runner after a bad pick up by third base. O'Brien's
fielder's choice got Maca out at third but moved Sweeney to second.
Finally senior Rosner came up and hit a rocket to left field
allowing Sweeney to come home for the 7-6 victory.
Little led the Cards going 3-4 on the day with two runs scored,
Rosner was 1-6 with a pair of RBI. CUA out hit Washington
12-8 and was flawless in the field with no errors to the
Shoremen's four. Three different players saw time on the
mound for the Cards but closer Michael Bzozowski (Moorestown,
N.J./Moorestown) got the win pitching the final three innings with
three strikeouts in just 10 batters faced.
The Cardinals will travel to Drew University on Saturday for
their final Landmark Conference series of the season.
