CUA will face Washington College for Senior Day

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University baseball team picked up a
non-conference win Wednesday with an 11-3 victory over the
Gettysburg College Bullets (16-21). The Cardinals got off to
a quick start with a combined six runs in the first two
innings. CUA is now 19-13-1 on the year with the victory.
Joe Maca's (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Saint Dominic) homer over the left
field fence started things off in the bottom of the first as he
drove in two runs with the hit. In the second, CUA continued
to dominate offensively with four runs. Matt Rosner (Cherry
Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) led off reaching on a walk before
Patrick Quintana's (Denver, Colo./Littleton) long hit to left field
moved him to third. Tommy Little (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha)
batted in the third run on a fielder's choice and a single from Joe
Devine (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) made it 4-0. Little then
stole home and a double from Maca allowed Devine across the plate
to end the inning.
The Cardinals got into a jam in the top of the fourth with bases
loaded and one out, but a grounder to Maca who managed to turn the
double play ended the inning with the six-run lead still
intact. Mike Goodman (Brookville, Md./Sherwood) added a solo
homer in the bottom of the fifth blasting one over the centerfield
wall. A triple and pair of hits moved runners in the top of
the sixth for the Bullets allowing one run across the plate.
The Cards added to the lead in the bottom of the seventh off of
Little's double bringing Quinatana home. Switching up the lineup,
the Cardinal defense allowed two runs in the top if the ninth but
it was not enough making the final 11-3.
Maca and Little led the Cardinals at the plate. Maca was
3-5 on the day with one run scored and three RBI. Little
added a 2-3 performance with two runs scored and three RBI as
well. Kevin Sweeney (Bethesda/St. Anselm's Abbey School)
pitched a majority of the game for CUA with three strikeouts.
The Cardinals had 13 hits while Gettysburg managed nine, both
squads committed two errors.
The Cardinals will face Washington College on Thursday at 3:30
p.m., at Talbot Field. The game will also be CUA's Senior
Day.
