Big Second Game Secures
Split
Cardinals go 1-1 against Moravian
4/19/2008
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Catholic University baseball squad split
with the Moravian College Greyhounds (16-16, 8-6 Landmark) Saturday
in the first two games of a three-game Landmark Conference series.
The Cardinals lost the first contest 11-4 but came back and
won the second 17-5.  With the 1-1 result, CUA is now 17-13-1
on the season with a 7-7 conference record.
Things started out well for the Cardinals in game one as Joe
Maca (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Saint Dominic) crossed the plate on an
error.  Moravian came back and added three in the bottom of
the second but CUA matched that in the top of the third to once
again go ahead.  Hits from Tommy Little (Hyattsville,
Md./DeMatha) and Tommy Bowles (Davidsonville, Md./Mount Saint Joe)
contributed to the scoring as well as some help from the Greyhound
pitching staff. Despite a solid third inning, the Cardinal offense
dried up after that as Moravian kept pounding the ball.  As
CUA struggled to score Moravian added two runs in the bottom of the
third and six in the bottom of the sixth making the final 11-4.
Bowles was 3-3 in the game with three doubles and an RBI while
Little was 3-4 with one run scored.  Brendan McGowan (Crofton,
Md./Archbishop Spalding) was given the loss on the mound after
pitching a little over three innings.  The Cards were out hit
15-8 which proved to be a deciding factor in the contest.
After struggling to score in the first game, the offense got
going in the second as they scored every inning but one and held
the Greyhounds scoreless until the bottom of the fourth.  Two
runs crossed the plate in the first inning after singles from
Bowles and Mike Goodman (Brookville, Md./Sherwood).  In the
second, two more came in thanks to a Bowles single up the middle
for two RBI.  CUA managed four runs in the third two coming in
off of Joe Devine's (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) double to right
center making the score 8-0.
After starting strong, CUA didn't score in the fourth inning and
allowed Moravian one but still controlled the flow of the game.
In the fifth, the Cards pulled in their biggest total of the
day with five runs.  A series of three hits including two for
extra bases one from Maca and the other from Bowles brought the
first three around.  After an out, the next two batters hit a
double and a single as Matt Rosner (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill
West) and Cory Hudson (Beltsville, Md./Gonzaga) helped make it
13-1.  Moravian managed one more in the bottom of the inning
but the scoring barrage continued in the sixth with two more on
hits from Jeff D'Annunzio (Warren, N.J./Watchuag Hills Regional)
and Rosner.
Moravian posted three in the sixth but the Cards finished it off
with a pair of runs on hits by Troy Langway (Beltsville, Md./St.
Vincent Pallotti) and Sean Earley (Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock
Township) in the seventh making the final 17-5.
The Cardinals had an astounding 21 hits for the game while
Moravian posted nine, each team had one error.  Maca led CUA
with a 3-3 performance and three runs scored as well as two RBI
while Bowles was 3-4 with one runs scored and four RBI.  Kevin
Sweeney (Bethesda/St. Anselm's Abbey School) threw the complete
game from the mound and had five strikeouts.
The Cardinals will face Moravian tomorrow in the final game of
the Landmark Conference series.
