Teams combine for five in the game
3/24/2008
BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Catholic University baseball team used an
outstanding day at the plate to get the 13-10 win over the
Bridgewater College Eagles (11-9-1) Monday in Virginia. The
Cardinals scored three runs in the final two innings move ahead for
the victory and improve to 6-8 on the season.
The first inning marked the only one were neither tallied a run
as CUA got things going in the second. Tommy Bowles
(Davidsonville, Md./Mount Saint Joe) and Bobby Picardo (Atlantic
Highlands, N.J./Middletown South/Communications) each brought
in runs but the Eagles answered with one of their own to make it
2-1. Tommy Little (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha) led off the
third with a solo homer which was followed by a pair of stolen
bases by Joe Maca (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Saint Dominic) who was
eventually brought home off of a Mike Goodman (Brookville,
Md./Sherwood) double.
After two quick outs to start the fourth, Matthew Rosner (Cherry
Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) came to the plate and hit a another
home run to spark a rally leading two a triple from Maca and three
runs in the inning to make the score 7-2. Unfortunately the
Cardinal defense allowed three runs in the bottom of the fifth as
Bridgewater began a comeback. The sixth saw back-to-back
homers for Robbie O'Brien (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) and Goodman to
bring in three runners but the rally didn't stop the Eagles as they
tied it at ten in the bottom of the seventh.
Needing to gain the momentum back, CUA started the eighth with a
hit and a walk to force the pitching change. It didn't do
much good, however, as Maca came up a slammed a double to bring
home both runners. The Cards held BC scoreless in the bottom
and added one more run for good measure in the top of the ninth
after a catcher error and an RBI from Picardo. A double play
ended the game with the final score 13-10.
Five different players notched two hits for the Cards, while
Maca and O'Brien each had three RBI. Despite the final score,
the Cardinals were out hit 17-12 but had just six players stranded
on base to the Eagles nine. Kevin Sweeney (Bethesda/St.
Anselm's Abbey School) started on the mound pitching the first six
innings with seven K's, but Brendan McGown (Crofton, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) got the win for CUA pitching two innings and Michael
Bzozowski (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) had the save.
The Cards will travel to Mary Washington on Tuesday for a
contest versus the Eagles.
