WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Catholic University baseball team
improved to .500 on the season with a 3-0 win over the McDaniel
College Green Terror (1-3) Wednesday afternoon. With the win
the Cards improve to 4-4 and have won their first two games after
returning from spring break.
The Cardinal offense methodically took control scoring in the
second, third and fourth innings while stalling any Green Terror
attack. In the second Tommy Little (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha)
got the Cards on the board with a homer over the right field fence
to make it 1-0.
After forcing McDaniel to go three and out for the second
consecutive inning, CUA once again used a big hit to cross the
plate as Mike Goodman (Brookville, Md./Sherwood) tripled to right
center and was brought home by Tommy Bowles (Davidsonville,
Md./Mount Saint Joe) on a sac fly to give the Cards a two-run
lead. In the fourth, the Cardinals took advantage of two
Green Terror field errors to put men on base and Joe Devine
(Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) brought in the run to make it 3-0
which would be the final.
Kevin Sweeney (Bethesda/St. Anselm's Abbey School) got the win
on the mound pitching seven innings with four strikeouts while
Billy Robbett (Springfield, Va./Bishop Iretan) was awarded the
save. Both squads had five hits in the game but six McDaniel
errors proved to be the difference. Little led the Cards at
the plate with two hits.
The Cardinals will have two days off before hosting Juniata in
their first conference game of the year on Saturday at noon.
