LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Catholic volleyball team traveled to Virginia for a non-conference meeting against Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals fell in the tough battle against the Hornets, 3-0.
Lynchburg opened the scoring with a service ace from Kenstin Phelps. Catholic answered with a kill from
Maddie Wilkey, assisted by
Anna Maria Carella. The Hornets quickly found their rhythm, taking a dominant lead over the Cardinals. Catholic added a few more points, coming from
Julia Raab,
Juliette Cummings and Wilkey again, but Lynchburg took set one, 25-8.
The Cardinals searched for their groove in set two. Lynchburg had built a strong lead, but Catholic fought back, logging five kills and a service ace from
Ava Borcky. Catholic also capitalized on Hornet errors to stay within reach. The Hornets ultimately took set two, 25-14.
Set three started off the Cardinals scoring the first two points, first a kill from Wilkey followed by another from Raab. The Hornets answered with a five-point run of their own. Catholic evened the score at five, but Lynchburg quickly responded. The Cardinals battled to keep the score close, but the Hornets ultimately secured the win in set three, 25-15.
Raab notched seven kills to lead the team, and Wilkey followed with six
. Alejandra Garcia had 12 digs on the day, and Carella had a game-high 11 assists.
Kate Berra also had five assists on the day.Â
Up next, Catholic will return for a crosstown battle against Gallaudet on September 23. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. at
Franny Murray Court.
