Catholic Notches Two Goals to Knock Off Neumann


WASHINGTON, D.C.  –  The 16th-ranked Catholic men's soccer team returned home to Carlini Field on Wednesday afternoon looking to keep its win streak alive to start the season against Neumann. Despite being outshot in the first half, the Cardinals found a goal in the 26th minute off a throw-in to gain control and added a second goal late in the second half to help finish off a 2-0 win.

The first shot on target of the contest came from the Knights off a free kick just six minutes into the action but Owen Allegro reached up to make the save and keep the score tied. Allegro went on to add two more saves to his total throughout the first 45 minutes. 

The Cardinals broke through at the midway point of the half when Andres Lopez subbed into the game and ripped a volley into the far right side of the net, less than 20 seconds after he entered the game. This put Catholic on top 1-0 and they took that lead into the halftime break.

Catholic put the game to rest in the 82nd minute after a perfect cross from the right side by Michael Brown gave a chance to Donik Elshani to double the lead. Elshani calmly set a shot into the top right corner to extend the lead to 2-0. The Cardinals prevented any more dangerous chances for the rest of regulation to close out their fifth consecutive victory to begin the season and extend their regular season win streak to 33 games dating back to 2024.

Allegro, Graham Leary, Ellington Andrews, Corey Magro and Charlie Paparella all played the full 90 minutes in the victory. Allegro's four saves was a season-high and Catholic recorded its third clean sheet on the season.

Lopez and Elshani each bagged their second goals of the season making them the fourth and fifth players on the team to reach multiple goals this season, and Lopez has now scored in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. Brown's assist on the second goal was the first of his career. The Cardinals have outscored opponents 15-2 thus far on the season.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, September 19 in a road match against Stockton. Kickoff is set for 5 pm.
