Cardinals Sweep Drew to Secure Second Seed Heading into Landmark Tourney

MADISON, N.J. – The Catholic softball team closed out regular season conference play with a sweep over Drew, securing the Landmark second seed into the conference tournament.

GAME ONE – Catholic 2, Drew 0

The Cardinals competed in a rubber match against the Rangers in game one. With Aubrynn Arcement on the mound, Catholic shutout Drew and only gave three hits.

The first four innings moved quickly with little offensive action. In the top of the fifth, Catholic strung together some timely offense to finally push some runs across the plate. Kerri Hatcliffe collected a leadoff single to right field, with Lisa Payne coming in to pinch run. Geneva Webber laid down a bunt in an attempt to move Payne to second, but the Rangers opted to get the lead runner out. With two outs on the board and a full count, Emma Fleming sent a ball through the right side, moving Webber to third. Fleming also showed her baserunning smarts, moving to second on the play. Olivia Stinchcomb earned the lone RBI of the game, scoring a pair of Cardinals, with a single up the middle.

Acrement's pitching and Catholic's defense closed out the game, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 win to start the doubleheader. The senior pitcher now moves to 10-4 on the year.

GAME TWO - Catholic 6, Drew 3

The Cardinal offense started off hot in game two, putting three runs on the board in the top of the first. Sam Grillo started the rally with a leadoff double to left center. Grillo took advantage of a throwing error and advanced to third. The Rangers attempted to shut down the offense, converting a double play and forcing the Cardinals to restart with two outs. Stinchcomb got the offense going once again with a single through the left side. Katie Scolese hit the first extra base hit of the day for the Cardinals with a double to center, moving Stinchcomb to third. Katie McHugh then earned herself a walk to load the bases. Arcement singled through the left side, sending Scolese and Stinchcomb home. Hatcliffe capped the inning off with an RBI single to left, scoring McHugh.

In the bottom of the inning, Sophia Colangelo collected two swinging strikeouts and forced a foul out to give Catholic the 3-0 lead after the first.

In the second, Webber singled through the left side, moving to second when Grillo laid down a sacrifice bunt. Fleming continued her strong offensive day with an RBI single to left center.

The Rangers answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring a pair of runs. The Cardinals gave up a leadoff walk followed by a bunt single. Drew then caused some chaos on the basepath, scoring on a throwing error. The Rangers added their second run on a sacrifice fly to center field.

In the third, Catholic added their fifth run of the game. Scolese singled to start the inning, advancing to second on a wild pitch. McHugh flew out to right field, but this allowed Scolese to move over to third. Arcement chalked up her third RBI of the game with a single to left. After three complete innings, the Cardinals held the 5-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Colangelo collected back-to-back strikeouts, one looking and one swinging. Drew's Karly Severinsen kept her team's offense alive with a double, then stealing third, and taking advantage of a throwing error from McHugh to score.

In the top of the fifth, with two outs on the board, Acrement stepped up to the dish and sent a homer over the left center wall. The Cardinals now led 6-3.

Morrigan Gardiner entered the game for the Cardinals in the bottom of the seventh. Gardiner closed out the game, giving the Cardinals the sweep on the day. Colangelo collected the win, increasing her record to 12-4.
