WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic men's lacrosse team extended their win streak to eight on Wednesday evening, defeating Elizabethtown 18-9.
Alejandro Masferrer led the charge for the Cardinals with four goals, guiding them to their fifth Landmark victory.
The Blue Jays struck first, scoring two goals within thirty seconds of each other. The first came from Reese Levinson, and the second from Jay Rodriguez. Catholic was quick to respond, with
Erik Aulbach opening the scoring for the Cardinals about 20 seconds after Rodriguez scored.
Catholic then got into a groove, scoring six straight goals in the first quarter. Six different Cardinals got on the board in the first, starting with Aulbach.
Alejandro Masferrer followed with his first goal of the game, scoring off a feed from
Will Gilfillan.
Logan Farrington netted one less than a minute later, assisted by
Cullen Lotz.
Chris McCabe then began his quest for a hat trick, doubling Catholic's lead with his first goal of the game. Gilfillan contributed one, and
Burke Healy capped the quarter, putting the Cardinals up 6-2 over the Blue Jays.
The second quarter saw some push back from Elizabethtown, but Catholic kept them at a distance, outscoring them 4-2.
Ryan Carickhoff opened quarter two with his first goal of the game. Levinson added one for the Blue Jays, but Lotz and McCabe tacked on two in response. Tristan Coleman contributed another for the visitors, but with seven seconds left on the clock, Lotz picked up the 10th goal of the game, assisted by
Brady McMahon, closing out the first half leading 10-4.
After the break, the Cardinals continued to extend their lead, starting with a goal from McMahon, fed by Lotz. McCabe followed shortly after, securing his hat trick. Coleman and Levinson contributed goals for the Blue Jays, but Masferrer split their goals with his second of the game. Catholic led 13-6 heading into the final quarter.
Carickhoff opened the quarter, the first of five Cardinal goals in the fourth. Brent Wehland netted one for Elizabethtown, but Lotz quickly scored to lock in his hat trick. Masferrer followed with his third, and added his fourth just minutes later. Carickhoff capped the game with his third, scoring off an assist from Healy to solidify the 18-9 win.
Masferrer led the team with four goals, while Lotz tallied three goals and three assists for six points in the game. Carickhoff and McCabe picked up hat tricks as well, McCabe logging an assist to total four points. Gilfillan dished out three assists and scored a goal for four points.
Healy and
Jake McGowan each had two caused turnovers on the day, leading the squad.
Jack Suchanek went perfect in faceoffs, winning 15 of 15 and scooping up 11 ground balls.
Connor Baia went 12-15, logging 11 ground balls.
In goal,
Colton Manorek recorded the win, notching 11 saves on the day.
Gianni Graziano also saw game action against the Blue Jays, recording one save.
This is Catholic's first win over Elizabethtown since 2022, bringing them to 10-9 overall in series history. With this victory, Catholic extends their win streak to eight games and remain unbeaten in Landmark play with a record of 5-0. They are now 9-4 overall.
Up next, Catholic will head to Scranton to take on the Royals who are also undefeated in conference play. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 11.
