Colangelo and Webber Help Cardinals Salvage Split at Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. – The Catholic softball team traveled to Salisbury, Maryland to take on Salisbury in a midweek non-conference slate. The Cardinals had a gritty game two, stringing together some timely offense to power themselves to a split against the Sea Gulls.

GAME ONE – Salisbury 7, Catholic 1

Sam Grillo started the day off with a leadoff single and advanced to second on Emma Fleming's sacrifice bunt. Olivia Stinchcomb then drew a walk, which Grillo took advantage of the situation to earn her first stolen base on the day. The senior pair then each collected a stolen base, with Grillo putting up the first run of the game. In the bottom of the inning the Sea Gulls quickly answered with a run of their own after a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt with Aubrynn Arcement in the circle.

Salisbury tacked on two more in the bottom of the second, both with two outs. Salisbury's Sam Flowers sent a double down the left line, moving her teammate to third. Both scored on an RBI single to right center.

Both squads went scoreless in the third and fourth innings. The Sea Gulls doubled their score in the fifth inning with a leadoff home run and a 2 RBI triple. After five complete, Salisbury led 6-1.

Salisbury added their seventh run in the bottom of the sixth with Morgan O'Sullivan in the circle. The Sea Gulls capitalized on a leadoff walk, scoring their runner on a double.

In the top of the seventh, the Cardinals attempted to start a late rally. Katie McHugh and Katie Scolese hit back-to-back singles to the left side and the pair advanced to second and third, respectively, on a right field fly from Arcement. Kerri Hatcliffe hit an RBI lineout to center field in an attempt to push another run across, but the Scolese was picked off to end the game. The Cardinals ultimately fell 7-1 in the first game of the day.

GAME TWO – Catholic 2, Salisbury 1

Both the Cardinals and Sea Gulls had quick first halves, going scoreless in the first.

In the second inning, the Cardinals put themselves on the scoreboard first. McHugh started the inning with a walk, advancing to third after a wild pitch and a stolen base. Arcement collected a walk of her own and stole second, taking advantage of McHugh on third. In the chaos, McHugh capitalized on an error from the catcher to score. After Kerri Hatcliffe was hit by a pitch, Brooklyn Richardson took to the circle for the Sea Gulls.

In the third, fourth, and fifth innings, Catholic's Sophia Colangelo and Salisbury's Richardson and Madison McGinnis competed in a rubber match, holding their opponents scoreless.

In the sixth inning, the Cardinals started with a base runner, after Scolese was hit by a pitch. Acrement singled up the middle, moving Scolese to second. Hatcliffe and Hayden Hudson both got on due to fielder's choice outs at third base, holding the Cardinals to first and second. Geneva Webber pushed the second Catholic run across with her single through the rightside. After the top half of the sixth, Catholic held the 2-0 lead.

Salisbury answered quickly with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the sixth. Colangelo and the Cardinals were able to shut down the Sea Gulls and pull out the 2-1 road win and salvage a split on the day. Colangelo now has 11 wins on the season, leading the Cardinal pitching staff.
