Catholic Splits on Senior Day Fueled by A Late Game Two Offensive Surge

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic softball team hosted Wilkes for the final home set of the season. The Cardinals split the Colonels on Senior Day, credited to a late offensive surge in game two. Prior to the game, the Cardinals recognized their seniors and one graduate student: Olivia Stinchcomb, Leeah Koegel, Aubrynn Arcement, Kerri Hatcliffe, Katie Scolese, Sam Grillo, and Morrigan Gardner.

GAME ONE – Wilkes 1, Catholic 0

Senior Aubrynn Arcement earned the game one start against the Colonels. Arcement started the inning off with a groundout, a walk, and then a second groundout. With a runner in scoring position on second base, Wilkes capitalized with an RBI single up the middle. After giving up another single, the Cardinals were able to collect another groundout to close out the top half.

Lauren DeMarco took to the circle for the Colonels, collecting a first out pop out. Emma Fleming singled down the right field line, but was left stranded.

The Cardinals put significant pressure on the Colonels in the bottom of the second. Katie McHugh earned a double and a stolen base, which was then followed by a hit by pitch and walk to load the bases with only one out. Despite this, Catholic was unable to push any runs across, leaving the score 1-0 after two innings.

The rest of the innings quickly turned over, proving to be a rubber match between Catholic's Arcement and Wilkes' DeMarco. Each pitcher only gave up four hits, making it hard for the Cardinals to turn the tide in their favor. Catholic ultimately fell 1-0 against Wilkes in game one.

GAME TWO – Catholic 6, Wilkes 2

After falling in the first game of the day, the Cardinals looked to salvage a split on Senior Day. Sam Grillo led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle, giving the Cardinals some much needed juice. Fleming followed it up with a single through the left side, chopping it over the third baseman. Katie McHugh landed the first Cardinal RBI of the day with her poke up the middle, scoring Grillo. After the first inning of game two, Catholic led 1-0.

The Colonels looked to answer in the top of the second and they came close by loading the bases with a series of three singles. Sophia Colangelo was able to shut Wilkes down by earning two strikeouts and fly out to left.

In the third inning, Geneva Webber led off with a double off the right center wall. Webber then advanced to third base when Grillo laid down a sacrifice bunt. Emma Fleming hit a ball to the third basemen who picked off Webber at home. The Cardinals were still able to score in the third inning when Olivia Stinchcomb hit a double off the top of the right field wall, sending Fleming home from first.

Wilkes crossed the plate for the first time in game two in the top of the sixth, all with two outs. Wilkes' Victoria Butler singled and scored when teammate Talia Piragas doubled to left center. Piragas advanced to third when the Cardinals attempted to get Butler at home, but she went in standing. Paige Randazzo collected an RBI single to tie the game at two runs apiece.

In the bottom of the sixth, tie ballgame, Arcement stepped up to the dish. The senior sent the second pitch flying over the left field, hitting a go-ahead homer to give Catholic the 3-2 lead.

Leeah Koegel walked followed by a pair of hit by pitches to load the bases. Stinchcomb cleared the bases with her 3-RBI double to the centerfield wall. After the inning was retired, Catholic held the 6-2 lead and was just three outs away from a senior day win.

In the top of the seventh, Wilkes threatened to score with two baserunners, but Catholic held it down to secure the 6-2 win.

Inside the Box Score:
  • Aubrynn Acrement led the Cardinals in the box, going 2-for-3 with her go-ahead homer. This is the second series in a row with a late game go-ahead homer from a senior, the previous being credited to Sam Grillo against Marymount (Va.).
  • Olivia Stinchcomb recorded four RBIs in game two, leading the team. The senior went 2-for-4 at the plate in game two.
  • Emma Fleming was the only Cardinal to collect multiple hits in game one, going 2-for-3.

The Cardinals improve to 26-10 on the season and 10-4 in the Landmark.

Up next, the Cardinals will travel to Salisbury, Md. for the final non-conference matchup of the season against Salisbury on Wednesday, April 29th. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 3 p.m. with game two to follow at Sea Gull Stadium.
