MADISON, N.J. - The Catholic women's lacrosse team secured another Landmark Conference victory on Thursday on the road against Drew. After trailing at the half, the Cardinals surged in the second half to earn a 17-8 win.
The battle began from the first draw, as Drew opened the scoring with a goal from Audrey Welch to get on the board.
Ellie Verrill responded for Catholic, scoring off an assist from
Izzy Fiore to even the score at one. The Rangers added another, but the Cardinals quickly answered, this time with a goal from
Henley Bredemann, assisted by
Maggie Traynor.Â
Drew added two more in the first quarter to secure a lead over Catholic. Verrill and Fiore connected again to keep the gap narrow, with Fiore setting up Verrill for her third goal of the game. The Cardinals trailed 4-3 heading into the second.
The score remained within one for nearly seven minutes in the second quarter before the Rangers scored three straight to extend their advantage to four. Catholic did not back down, scoring two goals to stay within reach. The first came from
Maddie McDevitt who converted a feed from Bredemann, and Bredemann quickly followed with another. The Cardinals went into the break down 7-5.
The second half surge began early in the third, as Catholic netted three straight, starting with Fiore.
Annie Galarza followed less than a minute later, to tie the game at seven, and McDevitt added another to give Catholic their first lead.
Catholic finished the quarter with five goals, while the defense limited Drew to just one. After the Rangers' lone goal, Fiore and Verrill each contributed a goal to help maintain control, taking a 10-8 lead into the final period.
The Cardinals pulled away in the fourth, scoring seven goals unanswered. Bredemann opened the scoring, and Fiore followed to complete her hat trick, later adding two more in the quarter. McDevitt also secured her hat trick, scoring two goals in the final quarter while Galarza notched her second of the game. Fiore capped off the scoring in the fourth as Catholic locked in the 17-8 victory.Â
Fiore led the squad, with seven points, recording seven points and two assists. Bredemann and Galarza followed with five, Bredemann logging three goals and an assist while Galarza had two goals and an assist. McDevitt totaled four goals, while Verrill had three goals and an assist for four points apiece.
Kelly Bunnick was a standout player on defense, totaling five caused turnovers and three ground balls for Catholic. McDevitt was also a key player, tallying three caused turnovers and a ground ball, as well as seven draw controls.
In goal,
Alexandra Ragano and
Olivia Koch both saw game action. Ragano recorded four saves while Koch logged a career-high 10.Â
This win improves the Cardinals to 6-5 overall and 4-0 in Landmark play. Up next, they will continue their road stint against Elizabethtown on Wednesday, April 8. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Wolf FIeld.
