WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic women's lacrosse team hosted No. 13 Scranton for a highly anticipated Landmark Conference showdown on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals battled hard against the nationally-ranked Royals, but fell in the meeting 10-4.
The Cardinals honored eight seniors who have dedicated their time and skills to Catholic both on and off the field over the past four years:
Laura Sullivan,
Tori Wilsey, Annie Galarza,
Izzy Fiore,
Grace Button,
Lindsay Sawyer,
Clare Martin, and
Maddie Rinker.
Scranton was first on the board in the opening quarter, as Grace Didominica scored the first goal of the game just two minutes into game action. Both teams continued to find their footing in the quarter, and the Royals took that momentum to build on their lead, scoring three more goals in the first.Â
The Cardinals continued to battle with Scranton in quarter two, but the Royals continued to grow their lead, scoring five goals in the quarter. Catholic was able to find the back of the net with one minute on the clock, when senior
Tori Wilsey scored her first goal of the game to put the Cardinals on the board. The Royals led 9-1 heading into the break.
After taking some time to regroup, both the Cardinal offense and defense brought the heat in the second half. Scranton scored first in the third quarter, but that would be their only goal of the second half, as the Catholic defense was a stronghold in the final two quarters of game action. Wilsey netted her second goal in the third, scoring while the Cardinals were a man-down.
Maggie Traynor then added one, and Catholic was down 10-3 heading into the fourth.
Looking to narrow the gap further in the final quarter, Catholic continued to fight, logging nine shots while holding Scranton to only six. The Cardinals capitalized on a man-up opportunity with a goal from
Maddie McDevitt. Despite holding the Royals to a scoreless quarter, Catholic was unable to take the lead, falling 10-4 in the match up.
Wilsey led the squad with two points for her two goals, McDevitt and Traynor had a point each. Defensively,
Clare Martin and
Olivia Koch played crucial roles, Martin logging two caused turnovers and Koch recording a career-high 13 saves.Â
Up next, Catholic will travel to Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania to compete against the Susquehanna on Wednesday, April 15. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sassafras Multipurpose Field.
