Women’s Lacrosse Drops Matchup to No. 11 Washington & Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Catholic women's lacrosse team continued their road stretch on Saturday afternoon with a matchup against No. 11 Washington & Lee. The Cardinals fell to the nationally-ranked Generals at Watt Field, 18-6.

Washington & Lee opened the scoring in the first quarter with a goal from Sophie Edwards putting them on the board. The Generals continued to establish a foothold, netting two more goals within two minutes to gain an early 3-0 lead over the Cardinals. Henley Bredemann put Catholic on the board in the seventh minute of play, scoring her ninth goal of the season off an assist from Izzy Fiore

The Generals continued to build their lead in the second quarter, with Lara Baki leading the charge with four goals in the quarter. Maggie Traynor contributed a second goal for the Cardinals, but they continued to trail 10-2 heading into halftime.

Washington & Lee struck first after the intermission, but Catholic responded quickly, with three straight goals to try and narrow the gap. The first two came from Fiore, followed by one from Lindsay Sawyer

In the fourth, Maddie McDevitt added a goal for the Cardinals, but the Generals continued to extend their lead, taking the victory 18-6.

Fiore led the team with two goals and an assist for three points. She currently leads the team with six assists so far this season. Ellie Verrill had a standout game defensively, recording three ground balls and three caused turnovers while Grace Button also recorded three caused turnovers and scooped up two ground balls. 

Up next, Catholic will return home for a meeting against Shenandoah on Wednesday, March 11. The game is scheduled for noon on Carlini Field.
