WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic women's lacrosse team captured their first home victory of the 2026 season against Shenandoah on Wednesday afternoon.
Izzy Fiore topped the leaderboard in the goals category with three, guiding the Cardinals to a 14-5 victory over the Hornets.
Eight Cardinals scored during the match up against Shenandoah, but
Maggie Traynor was the first to get on the board in the fourth minute of play, scoring off an assist from
Maddie McDevitt. Cecilia Rock responded for the Hornets, evening the score at one.
Annie Galarza,
Izzy Fiore, and
Tori Wilsey all added to Catholic's tally, and the Cardinals led 4-1 to close out quarter one.
Catholic brought that same momentum into the second quarter, with
Lindsay Sawyer setting the pace as she picked up her first goal just 15 seconds in. The Cardinals once again held the Hornets to a lone goal in quarter too, and managed to extend their lead by four.
Ellie Verrill and
Henley Bredemann netted their first goals of the game, and Galarza notched her second, all three of which were unassisted. Catholic held an 8-2 advantage heading into the intermission.
The scoring frenzy did not stop in the second half, with the Cardinals adding six more goals throughout the rest of the game. Fiore started it off for Catholic in the third, scoring off a feed from Bredemann.
Maddie McDevitt scored the 10th goal of the game for Catholic, extending their lead to eight goals over the Hornets. Shenandoah's Cameryn Bowker added a goal in the third quarter, but Sawyer quickly responded, capitalizing on a power play to keep the Cardinals at an eight goal advantage heading in the final quarter of play.
Shenandoah struck first in the fourth, scoring within a minute of the opening whistle. The Hornets added another goal, narrowing the gap to six with 11 minutes left of the clock, but the Cardinal defense held strong, putting a stop to the Hornets' scoring for the remainder of the game. Catholic stayed strong on the offensive, growing their lead by three more goals, starting first with a goal from Traynor. Fiore found the back of the net less than 15 seconds later to secure her hat trick, while Wilsey recorded the assist. Wilsey went on to contribute the final goal for the Cardinals, her third goal of the season, with just five minutes left of game action. Catholic held a nine goal lead over Shenandoah to close out the game, securing the 14-5 victory.
Fiore and Wilsey led the team in points, Fiore with her hat trick and Wilsey picking up two goals and an assist. Fiore is now tied for third on the squad with six goals this season and she leads the team with six assists. Sawyer, Traynor, and Galarza each finished the game with two goals. Sawyer stays atop the leaderboard in scoring alongside Bredemann, both of which have 10 goals this season.
Grace Button was a crucial player on the defensive end for Catholic, totaling five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Sophia Callano and
Olivia Daniels also had two caused turnovers and ground balls apiece.
In goal,
Alexandra Ragano picked up her second win of the season, and scooped up four ground balls and notched two saves against the Hornets.
With this win, Catholic boosts their overall record to 2-3 this season. The Cardinals will head to Chicago, Ill. to match up against the University of Chicago on Saturday, March 13. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. EST.
