Hollinger Delivers Decisive Point in Cardinals Win Over Goucher

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic men's tennis team hosted Goucher for a heated contest on the Dowd Family Tennis Courts Tuesday evening. The Cardinals fought hard to pull out an impressive 4-3 win over the Gophers.

The match was competitive from the beginning, as all three doubles courts battled to secure the point. Catholic showcased their determination, with wins across the board. Flynn Hollinger and Jake Hershey locked in the first win in the three spot, defeating their Gopher opponents 7-5. Diego Romo and James Earwood secured the point in the one spot, defeating their opponents in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5). Lorenzo Neri and Ian Arenas solidified the Catholic sweep on court two, winning 7-5.

The fight continued in singles. Arenas and Romo secured the first two singles points for Catholic, both winning in straight sets. In the four spot, Romo fought against Guilherme Moraes, defeating him in a first set tiebreak, 7-6 (7-2), then capturing the victory in set two, 6-4. Arenas matched up against George King in the six spot, winning 7-5, 6-0.

Neri took on the 2025 Landmark Conference Player of the Year, Gabe Naftoly, in the one spot, where the two battled hard for the point. Neri won the first set, 6-2, but fell in set two in a tiebreak, 7-6 (13-11). Naftoly secured the win after forcing set three, 6-1.

With the score tied at three, the match point was up to Hollinger, who was facing off against Ian Hewes on court five. All three sets were close, Hollinger taking set one 7-5, followed by Hewes who forced set three after winning the set 7-5. The two battled in set three, but it was Hollinger who pulled out the win, 6-2 to secure the 4-3 win for the Cardinals.

This marks Catholic's first victory over Goucher since 2014. With this win, the Cardinals improve their record to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in Landmark Play. Up next, Catholic will head to Salisbury for a non-conference match on Friday, April 10. The meeting is set for noon at the SU Indoor and Outdoor Tennis Center.
