EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. - The Catholic women's tennis team faced off against Wilkes University on Saturday afternoon for their first Landmark match of the spring season. The Cardinals took down the Colonels, 5-2.
Catholic secured the doubles point with two dominant wins over Wilkes. In the two spot,
Meaghan Laniewski and
Ella Knox shut out their opponent, winning 6-0 over Isabella Bopp and Edmond Kensington.
Ava Niggemeier and
Mairead O'Hara took down Isabel Schreffler and Ava Vacula in the three spot,, 6-1.
In signles,
Annie Nemoy, O'Hara, and Laniewski defeated their opponents in straight sets. In the two spot, Nemoy faced off against Julia Spaeth and won 6-0, 6-1. O'Hara took town Edmond Kensington in similar fashion in the four spot, winning 6-0, 6-1. In the five spot, Laniewski's opponent Ava Vacula battled hard, but ended up falling to Laniewski, 6-4, 6-3.
In the six spot,
Marcela Pena had a tough fight against Isabella Bopp. After taking set one 6-1, Bopp came back, winning set two 7-5. Pena kept her composure, and defeated Bopp in a dominant third set tiebreak, 10-3.Â
With this victory, Catholic improves their overall record to 5-8 and conference record to 2-0. The Cardinals will continue Landmark Conference play on Wednesday, March 25 against Goucher. The match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at home at the Dowd Family Tennis Courts.
