WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic women's tennis team hosted the Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday for their first home match of the spring season. The Cardinals fell to the Ducks, 7-0.
Both teams kicked off the day with fierce competition in doubles, withÂ
Annie Nemoy and
Shloka Tambat winning in the one spot, 6-4, and the Ducks earning the victory in the three spot. It all came down to court two where
Meaghan Laniewski and
Ella Knox faced off against Wei Wei Lai and Lorena Piegas. Both pairs battled for the win to secure the point, but it was Stevens that took the victory in the second spot, 6-4.
The battle continued in singles with Laniewski and
Ava Niggemeier attempting to force third sets against their Duck opponents. For the second time on Friday, Laniewski battled against Stevens' Lai, this time in the three singles spot. Lai defeated Laniewski 6-1 in set one, which led to a heated set two where Laniewski fought hard, but fell 6-4. In the five spot, Niggemeier was in a tight contest against Stevens' Kaylee Hobbick. Niggemeier nearly took it to a third set, but ultimately fell 7-5, 6-4.
Nemoy was the last Cardinal to finish, competing against Alix Dry in the one spot. Dry took the first set 6-2, but Nemoy was neck-and-neck with her in set two, looking to capture a point for the Cardinals. Nemoy nearly forced a third set, but fell to Dry, 7-6.
Up next, Catholic will head to Wilkes for a Landmark Conference match up on Saturday, March 21. The meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Ralston Athletic Complex.
