SALEM, Va. - The Catholic women's lacrosse team captured their first victory on Saturday afternoon in a nailbiter against Roanoke.
Henley Bredemann and
Lindsay Sawyer led the Cardinals with four goals apiece to secure the 13-12 win.
Bredemann was the first to strike in the opening quarter, assisted by
Izzy Fiore, putting Catholic on the board.
Tori Wilsey picked up the second goal, followed by another goal from Bredemann, giving the Cardinals a 3-0 lead over the Maroons to close out the quarter.
Roanoke was unable to find the back of the net until Maddie McDonald put the Maroons on the board two minutes into the second quarter. Mcdonald added another goal to narrow the gap and Sawyer responded with another goal for Catholic. Roanoke was able to get into a groove, scoring four more goals to take the lead 6-4 heading into halftime.
Catholic looked to regain control after the intermission, notching four goals to start the half, first from Sawyer, then from
Maddie Rinker, followed by two more from Bredemann. There was some back-and-forth to close out the third, but the Cardinals remained ahead, up 9-8 heading into the final quarter.
The Maroons tied it up within the first five minutes of the fourth quarter with a goal from Sydney Winpigler. Catholic answered with four-straight goals, starting with one from
Maggie Traynor, followed by Wilsey, Sawyer, and Fiore. The Cardinals battled to hold off the Maroons in the final two minutes of play, but they added three more goals to nearly close the gap. They scored their final goal with 12 seconds to spare, but couldn't seal the deal. Catholic emerged victorious over Roanoke, 13-12.
With four goals each, Bredemann and Sawyer propelled the Cardinals to victory, bringing Bredemann to a total of nine goals this season followed by Sawyer with seven.
Annie Galarza and Fiore each picked up two assists.
In addition to her two crucial goals, Wilsey led the team with seven draw controls while also scooping up two ground balls and notching two caused turnovers.
Caroline Gaines led with four ground balls, and picked up one caused turnover.
With this win, Catholic brings their record to 1-2 overall. Up next, the Cardinals will head to Lexington, Va. to face off against Washington and Lee. The game is scheduled for noon on Saturday, March 7 at Alston Parker Watt Field.
