WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic women's basketball team hosted Susquehanna in a midweek conference matchup. After a hard fought battle through four quarters, the Cardinals fell 72-70 in the final seconds of overtime.
Amelia Kennedy opened the game with a layup, putting Catholic on the boards first. Susquehanna's Julia Pinkert answered with a three. With five and half minutes left in the first quarter,
Anna Scoblick stole the ball and converted on a fastbreak to even the score at 8 points apiece. The River Hawks then went on a seven point run, thwarted by a layup from
Anna Kreinbrook. Catholic ended the quarter trailing 20-12.
Catholic battled in the second quarter in an attempt to mount a comeback.
Carly Catania scored the first Cardinal bucket of the quarter a minute and a half in. Both teams entered a scoring drought for three minutes and 42 seconds.
McKenna Karlson ended it with a pair of made free throws, trailing 29 to 25. The Cardinals headed into the locker room 35 to 28 at the half.
Scoblick put the first basket of the second half on the board for the Cardinals in the opening minute, adding to her stellar day. Catholic ultimately was outscored in the third quarter 22 to 14, forcing the Cardinals to put up a fight in the fourth.
The Cardinals kept the fire alive in the fourth quarter, outscoring the River Hawks 21 to 6. Catholic entered the fourth trailing 45 to 57. With less than three minutes left of regulation,
Olivia Boccella fed the ball to Catania, who made a layup to tie the game at 61 points. The battle was neck-and-neck until the final buzzer, and with a missed jumper from the River Hawks, the game was headed into overtime.
Susquehanna scored first in overtime, but with two made free throws, the game was once again tied up. With just three seconds left, the River Hawks took the lead, 72-70 to secure the victory.
Scoblick finished the game with 21 points, bringing her to over 200 points on the season. She also logged six rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and four steals.
Catania had a standout performance against the River Hawks, tallying a season-high 17 points and 11 rebounds, to record her third double-double of the season.
Up next, the Cardinals will head to Madison, N.J. on Saturday, Feb. 14 to face off against Drew. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
