Catholic Drops Conference Opener at Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.  –  The Catholic opened up the Landmark Conference schedule with a road trip to take on Lycoming, looking to pick up the first win of the season. The Warriors took control in the second quarter when they outscored the Cardinals 28-7 to help lead to a 49-25 defeat for Catholic.

After the Warriors started the game off with an 80-yard touchdown run from Terrance Oliver, the Cardinals responded with a six-play, 49-yard scoring drive after an interception from Billy Turner set the offense up in plus territory. Charles Gulbin sparked the drive with a 19-yard completion to Hunter Boyd and found Roman Landamia later in the drive to put Catholic in the red zone. Two plays later, Gulbin connected with Bobby Hartman in the end zone to tie things up at seven.

After a touchdown drive by Lycoming, Gulbin led Catholic back down the field as he completed passes to Adrian Fresen for first downs on two occasions to put it in Lycoming territory. Hartman hauled in a first down catch to put the Cardinals at the Warriors 12 and they called on Maximo Machado who knocked in a 34-yard field goal to make it a 14-10 ballgame.

After a turnover from the Cardinals, it took Lycoming just one play to score on a 70-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 11. On the ensuing Catholic drive, the Warriors extended the lead with a pick six to take full momentum of the action. The Cardinals bounced back with another touchdown drive that was capped by a two-yard touchdown run from Keegan Eichert to bring the score to 28-17. Lycoming went on to score on its last two drives of the half to take a 42-17 lead into the halftime break.

Catholic put together an 11-play, 65-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter where Gulbin finished the drive with a one-yard touchdown run to make it a 49-25 game which wound up being the last score of the contest.

Gulbin had career-highs in both completions and passing yards as he finished 30-for-48 and 273 yards with one passing and one rushing touchdown. Lamar West Jr. had success in the second half with his rushing attempts, averaging 5.4 per carry. Fresen totaled career-highs in both receptions and yards, hauling in 10 passes for 100 yards. His 10 catches are the most by a Catholic receiver thus far on the season.

Turner once again led the Cardinals in tackles with eight, including seven solo tackles to go along with his first career interception. John Brown also added seven tackles with a tackle for loss and Bo Wargel came up with a fumble recovery.

Catholic returns home next week on Saturday, October 10 to take on 22nd-ranked Susquehanna on Cardinal Weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 pm.
