Catholic Falls to Elizabethtown in Conference Opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic women's volleyball team hosted Elizabethtown for its Landmark Conference opener on Friday evening. The Cardinals fell in the match 3-0.

Juliette Cummings opened the scoring for both teams on Friday evening with a kill, assisted by Anna Maria Carella. The Cardinals took point two by way of an attack error, but the Blue Jays responded with three points of their own, and the back-and-forth began from there. Catholic had two solid runs to extend its lead, scoring four straight, followed by a three-point run. The Blue Jays clawed back, and the score continued bouncing between the teams until Elizabethtown secured the win with a kill from Bailey McFeaters to win the set, 25-22.

Elizabethtown played strong defense in set two, holding Catholic off while they built a solid lead. The Cardinals attempted to chip away at the Blue Jays' advantage with kills from Maddie Wilkey, Caroline Welsh, Julia Turchiano and Cummings. Elizabethtown held strong, winning the set 25-12.

Catholic opened the scoring once again, this time with a kill from Turchiano, but Elizabethtown quickly answered with four-straight points. They continued to add to their tally, but the Cardinals stayed in the fight, battling back before tying up the score at 15. Catholic nearly forced a fourth set, staying within a few points of their opponent, but the Blue Jays notched the final two points to lock in the victory with a 25-21 win.

Carella had 15 assists, her 10th game this season in the double figures. She leads the squad this season with 197 assists. Cummings led the squad with six kills. Alejandra Garcia had the most digs with 14, her fourth game this season with 10 or more. She brings her season total to 114. Turchiano had eight digs while Laci Freitas had six.

Up next, Catholic will host Randolph-Macon and Susquehanna on Saturday, October 3. The Cardinals will first take on Susquehanna at noon, followed by a Senior Day match against Randolph-Macon at 4 p.m.
