SELINSGROVE, PA – The Catholic women's basketball team traveled to Selinsgrove, Pa. to take on Landmark opponent Susquehanna. Catholic came back from an 11 point deficit late in the game to reach 7-0 in conference play.
The Cardinals and River Hawks battled early with the lead changing six times in the first quarter. Susquehanna struck first with a layup from Carly George. Catholic's
Carly Catania gave the Cardinals their first lead of the game with a three.
Raquel Guidetti made a pair of free throws to bring the Catholic lead up by seven points. Susquehanna answered with six points in a row to end the quarter 17-16 in Catholic's favor. Catania went on to score seven of the 17 points that quarter, with four other Cardinals adding to the fight.Â
Alexa Kenah opened the second quarter with a three pointer, assisted by
Anna Kreinbrook. The Cardinal offense was stifled late in the second. Susquehanna evened the score at 26 points apiece with 2:36 left in the half. The River Hawks ended the quarter with an 11 point run, securing the 31-26 lead at the half.Â
The River Hawks subdued the Cardinal offense early in the third quarter, building their lead slowly. With 4:26 left in the quarter, the Cardinals were down ten points, 41 to 31. A layup from Catania and a three from Kenah kept the Cardinals in the fight. Following some back-and-forth action, highlighted with buckets from
Sam Blumenthal,
Juliana O'Dowd, and
Anna Kreinbrook from the bench, the Cardinals were able to cut the lead down to seven points. Susquehanna's Zoie Maffei scored a pair of free throws to end the third quarter with her team in the lead 51-42.
Catholic, looking to remain undefeated in conference play, needed to battle back in the final ten minutes of the game.
Amelia Kennedy came out hot, starting a six point run with her layup. A three from
Ryan Burden gave Catholic its closest trail of the quarter so far at 55-53. With 46 seconds left to play
Anna Scoblick secured the first Catholic lead since the first quarter with a layup. The Cardinals now held a 59-58 lead.
Anna Scoblick went on to shoot 5-for-5 at the free throw line in the final minute.
Amelia Kennedy and
Ryan Burden secured the 66-62 Catholic win with a made free throw apiece. The Cardinals outscored the River Hawks 24 to 11 in the final quarter.
Catholic scored 24 of its points off of turnovers, opposed to Susquehanna's five.
Carly Catania scored 12 points and chalked up 6 rebounds. Seniors
Anna Scoblick and
Amelia Kennedy followed close behind with 11 and 10 points apiece, respectively.Â
Juliana O'Dowd made the most of her appearance in tonight's game, scoring six points and collecting a rebound.Â
Up next, the Cardinals will travel to Scranton, Pa. to take on the No. 2 ranked Scranton Royals on Saturday, January 17th. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at the John Long Center.
