WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic men's basketball team hosted Susquehanna on Wednesday evening for their second Landmark Conference match up of the new year.
Brian Herbert led the charge for the Cardinals with 27 points, propelling the team to an 80-69 victory over the River Hawks to keep their conference undefeated streak alive.
Michael Dankert put the Cardinals on the board to start the game with shot from beyond the arc, which was set up by
CJ Ruoff.Â
Googie Seidman kept the momentum flowing with another basket from three, putting Catholic up 6-0 over Susquehanna. Seidman went on to tally 11 points, six rebounds, and two steals in the half. Herbert also had a double-figure half, scoring 11 points in the first.Â
The Cardinals were strong defensively from the tip, holding the River Hawks to only two points for the first six minutes of play, while they built a 14-point lead. They continued to find success in the field, going up by as many as 20 points over Susquehanna. Catholic led 39-21 heading into the halftime break.Â
The River Hawks made some adjustments in the second half to attempt to mount a comeback over the Cardinals. They managed to outscore Catholic 48-41 in the half, but it wasn't enough to take the lead.Â
Seven members of the Cardinals squad were able to get on board, five of which were in the double figures, including Dankert and Ruoff. Dankert contributed eight more points in the second half, bringing his total to a season-high 13 for the game, while Ruoff added five points to his tally, closing out the game with 15 points and four assists.
Herbert added 16 points in the half to bring his total to 27, his sixth game with 20 or more points. He shot 70% from the field and went 11-12 from the free-throw line against the River Hawks.
With no wavering in their lead for the duration of the game, the Cardinals took down the River Hawks, 80-69. This win keeps them undefeated in Landmark play with a record of 7-0, and extends their overall record to 11-3.Â
