Box Score
Washington, DC - The Catholic field hockey team falls 2-1 in their home opener against Randolph-Macon, but finds its first goal of the season.Â
In the 8th minute of the first quarter,
Maddie Pennisi had an opportunity to score for the Cardinals on a penalty stroke. Her flick, unsuccessful, took the ball just above the goal. At the end of the first quarter, both teams remained scoreless.Â
At the beginning of the second quarter, Randolph-Macon's Llana Thach scored her first goal of the season from an assist from Courtney Moodie during a corner. Breea Dresler scored Randolph-Macon's second goal on a corner, assisted by Janne Roelink during the third quarter.
The score remained 2-0 as the clock went down to zero, but a corner was called mere seconds before time ran out. With no time on the clock,
Lauren Keast inserted the ball, hoping that her pass would lead to a Catholic goal. After a series of passes at the top of the arc and maneuvering around the defense,
Bella Reyes found the back of the cage to break the scoring drought.Â
Despite not scoring until time expired, the Cardinals created ample opportunities. Catholic outshot Randolph-Macon 21-5 and had 12 corners to the Yellow Jackets' 8. The Cardinals had possession for most of the game and found themselves in their offensive end of the field, but were unable to convert.
Molly Romano led the Cardinals in shots with 7, 3 of which were on goal.Â
The Cardinals will be back at home on September 7th at 2 p.m. to play against Dickinson in another non-conference match-up.
